The best Plex player depends on what you expect it to do. A home theater built around UHD Blu-ray remuxes has different needs from a bedroom TV playing ordinary H.264 and HEVC files.
The short answer
- Buy the Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) if you need Dolby TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X from local disc remuxes. It is old, but it remains the safest mainstream Plex choice for sending those tracks untouched to a compatible receiver or soundbar.
- Buy the Apple TV 4K 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model if you want the best everyday interface and do not need TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X object metadata. Add Infuse Pro if the native Plex app struggles with an MKV, subtitle format, or lossless audio track.
- Buy the Google TV Streamer (4K) if you want a current Google TV box with Gigabit Ethernet near the middle of the market and can accept less complete disc-audio support.
- Buy a Roku Ultra or discounted 4K stick for a secondary TV, a modest library, or a tight budget. Do not expect budget hardware to behave like a dedicated remux player.
Whatever box you choose, use wired Ethernet when you can. It is the most reliable connection for Plex, especially with high-bitrate 4K remuxes. Good Wi-Fi can work, but it has more variables and less predictable headroom.

Best for a serious home theater: Nvidia Shield TV Pro
The Shield TV Pro is still the box to beat when the receiver’s front panel needs to say TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X.
That distinction matters. Plex can report Direct Play, meaning the server sent the original file, while the player still decodes its audio before HDMI output. The Shield can pass supported Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X bitstreams to compatible home-theater equipment. This preserves the object metadata used to place effects above and around the listener.
The Shield Pro also has Gigabit Ethernet, two USB ports, and mature Plex and Kodi options. Kodi with PlexKodiConnect can handle some unusual codecs or subtitle formats that give the native Plex app trouble.

Buy the Shield TV Pro, not the smaller tube-shaped Shield TV, for a demanding Plex setup. The Pro’s extra memory, storage, 64-bit app support, and USB ports are worth the difference.
Best for most people: Apple TV 4K
The Apple TV 4K is the easier recommendation when the goal is a fast, quiet box that works well every day. Its interface is clean, app performance is excellent, and it fits naturally into an Apple household.
Choose the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet model. The 64GB model is Wi-Fi only. Plex does not need the extra storage, but Gigabit Ethernet is worth buying.
Apple handles lossless home-theater audio differently from the Shield. An app such as Infuse can decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio and send lossless multichannel LPCM, which is uncompressed channel-based audio. That preserves the sound in a normal 5.1 or 7.1 mix, but it does not preserve TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X object metadata. A receiver will usually display “Multichannel PCM” instead of the original codec name.
This is not poor audio quality. It is a feature tradeoff. If your setup has no height speakers, or if Atmos from disc remuxes is not important, Apple TV remains an excellent Plex player.
Native Plex or Infuse?
Keep both if you have a varied library.
The native Plex app provides Plex’s complete interface and features. It is also better suited to remote playback when Plex needs to reduce the bitrate.
Infuse uses its own playback engine while reading the same Plex library. It directly handles a wide range of containers, codecs, and subtitles, including many MKV, PGS, and ASS/SSA combinations. Infuse Pro can decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to lossless LPCM. It does not restore TrueHD Atmos, DTS:X, or Dolby Vision Profile 7 support that the Apple TV platform does not provide.

Best current Google TV option: Google TV Streamer
The Google TV Streamer (4K) is a sensible middle choice for someone who wants a current Google platform, built-in Gigabit Ethernet, and an ordinary Plex library. It supports modern HDR formats, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and integrates well with Google Home.
Its published audio support does not make the same disc-audio promises as the Shield. Expect more chance of audio conversion with TrueHD and DTS-HD material. That is fine for TV speakers, many soundbars, and libraries built mostly from streaming-service or smaller encodes. It is less convincing for a receiver-based remux theater.

Fire TV Cube and Roku Ultra: good for specific households
The third-generation Fire TV Cube is worth considering in an Alexa household. Amazon lists AV1, TrueHD passthrough, and DTS passthrough capabilities, but the actual Plex result still depends on the app, file, firmware, and receiver chain. Its built-in Ethernet port is only 100 Mbps. Clean Wi-Fi 6E may be faster, though it is less predictable than a wired Gigabit connection.
Roku Ultra is the simpler option. It has a familiar remote, broad streaming-app support, and Ethernet, but its wired port is also 100 Mbps. Roku’s published audio support does not promise the full TrueHD and DTS-HD behavior that makes the Shield special. Choose it for ease of use and ordinary Plex files, not as the centerpiece of a high-end remux system.
Best budget option: use the stick where it makes sense
A discounted Roku, Fire TV, or Google TV 4K stick can be perfectly good on a secondary television. Typical H.264 or HEVC video with AAC, AC-3, or E-AC-3 audio is much easier to play than a full UHD remux with lossless audio and image-based subtitles.
Budget sticks usually depend on Wi-Fi, have limited storage, and may need an adapter for Ethernet. Many of those adapters top out at 100 Mbps. Model names and capabilities also change often, so buy from a seller with an easy return policy and test your own files before the window closes.
Saving money on the client makes sense when the TV uses its own speakers, the library is moderate in bitrate, and server transcoding is available as a fallback. It makes less sense when you have already invested in a receiver, height speakers, and a large remux collection.
Why Ethernet is the best Plex connection
A movie’s listed average bitrate does not show its brief peaks. A high-bitrate 4K remux may run comfortably for several minutes, then hit a dense scene that needs much more bandwidth. Wi-Fi also loses usable capacity to interference, retransmissions, distance, and other devices sharing the channel.
Gigabit Ethernet removes most of that uncertainty. It gives the Shield TV Pro, Apple TV 4K Ethernet model, and Google TV Streamer plenty of margin for local Plex playback and makes buffering problems easier to diagnose.
Strong 5GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 can still be enough. Nearby Wi-Fi 6E can be excellent. If running a cable is impractical, use Wi-Fi and test the largest, highest-bitrate files you actually own. Seek through them repeatedly and watch the Plex Dashboard. Do not rely only on an internet speed test; local Wi-Fi conditions are what matter between the server and player.
Terms worth knowing
- Direct Play: Plex sends the original file without converting it.
- Direct Stream: Plex repackages compatible tracks into another container without re-encoding the video.
- Transcode: Plex converts video or audio into a format the client accepts. Video transcoding uses much more server power and may reduce quality.
- Passthrough: The player sends an encoded audio track to a receiver or soundbar for decoding.
- LPCM: Uncompressed digital audio. Multichannel LPCM can be lossless while still lacking Atmos or DTS:X object metadata.
- Remux: A copy of the original disc video and audio placed in a different container, usually without re-encoding. Remuxes are large and can have high bitrate peaks.
- Object metadata: Position information used by formats such as Atmos and DTS:X to place sounds in three-dimensional space, including height channels.
Test before the return window closes
Connect the player through the TV, receiver, or soundbar you will actually use. Set Plex local quality to Maximum or Original and leave Direct Play enabled. Then test:
- An ordinary H.264 file
- A high-bitrate 4K HEVC HDR remux
- Any Dolby Vision profiles in your own library
- TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X or DTS-HD MA tracks
- PGS and ASS/SSA subtitles
- Repeated seeking through your largest file
Watch the Plex Dashboard to see whether playback is Direct Play, Direct Stream, audio transcode, or video transcode. Check the receiver’s display too. Plex can say Direct Play while the receiver correctly says Multichannel PCM.

Choose the Shield TV Pro if all of these sound familiar:
- You keep full UHD Blu-ray remuxes
- You use an AVR or capable soundbar
- TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X is a requirement
- You accept older hardware to get the right format support
Choose the Apple TV 4K 128GB Ethernet model if:
- You value speed, polish, and low maintenance
- Lossless 5.1 or 7.1 LPCM is enough
- You are willing to add Infuse Pro for difficult files
- TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X from remuxes are not requirements
Choose Google TV Streamer, Fire TV Cube, Roku Ultra, or a budget stick if:
